'The King' is inspired by the king protea, the national flower of South Africa, and the largest and most spectacular of all Protea species. The name 'protea' comes from the Greek god Proteus, who could change his form at will, a reference to the wide variety of forms to which Proteas belong.
The King was photographed at Table Mountain Nature Reserve, the ethereal mist inspiring the crossover between the illustrations seen on playing cards and the powerful king protea.
